The Last Recruiting Push for 2011
The Oregon D1 Ambassadors basketball program is going to embark on the most exciting chapter of the July viewing period this week when all five teams make the pilgrimage out to Las Vegas, NV for the Fab 48 tournament (July 22-25th) and immediately followed up by the Best of the Summer in Anaheim, CA. These two tournaments in the past have really helped our players get their names out there to bigger programs. It has helped the 36 young men we have currently playing basketball in college get noticed by colleges that traditionally do not recruit the Pacific Northwest heavily.
The Fab 48 tournament in its first year drew a huge number of college coaches including the likes of: John Calipari (Kentucky), Rick Pitino (Louisville), Roy Williams (North Carolina), Coach K (Duke), Craig Robinson (Oregon State), Dana Altman (Oregon), Ken Bone (Washington State), Mark Few (Gonzaga), and Johnny Dawkins (Stanford) just to name a few.
The competition they will encounter here is going to be stiff considering that many of the programs that participate here have multiple kids that are D1 prospects or are signees with D1 programs. This will be a good barometer as to whether our kids are ready for that level of competition, which the coaches in this program feel that all our kids are ready for. The tournament draws 172 teams from across the country and 48 of those teams go into the invitational bracket. We have teams slated to play in the U17 (3 teams), U16, and U15 divisions. The amount of time, games scheduled, and the time spent thinking about basketball will probably not give our kids too much time to tour around. This is probably going to be the most basketball intense time they spend in their young basketball careers.
After that three day tournament the teams will drive into Anaheim, CA to participate in the Double Pump Best of the Summer Tournament. This tournament is the closure for our program in the July viewing period and will be a tough test for our players in that they will have to get up for another tournament a day after ending the Vegas tournament. The tournament runs from July 27-30th at one site in the Anaheim area. The tournament hosts 208 teams and guarantees four games per team with a possibility of a team playing up to ten games. This tournament will also be another opportunity for college coaches to view our players against elite competition.
